The matriarch is the flower of the family tree — she carries the roots of heritage, secrets, and history.

Aunty Elo is the only living family member who holds the recipe for our Ma Nicholas’s Peppa Sauce. This recipe was passed down through the rare and sacred bond between mother and daughter-in-law.

As matriarchs of their families, and mothers to a collective of fifteen children, Elo and Ma spent weekend nights cooking and selling food in the community of La Clery. They sourced produce from their village in Balca, from gardens, and from the local markets. Fridays were Ma’s day to sell with Elo by her side, and Saturdays were Elo’s turn with Ma’s support. Together, their love language of food became empowerment — feeding families, sparking conversations, and nourishing community.

The Peppa Sauce was their secret weapon — ground to perfection, the cherry on top of any weekend dish. For Elo, it became a true gift from Ma: a treasure and a revenue stream that could always “make a way.”

Today, at 77 years old, Elo still pours love into every bottle. It is now her sole source of income, sustaining her life and home while carrying forward a legacy of resilience and joy.
